How Can I Participate in Erasmus+?

Erasmus+ Programme is one of the European Union’s most important initiatives for supporting education, training, youth, and sport activities across Europe. Many young people are interested in participating but are often unsure about how the application process works. Understanding the structure of the program is the first step toward getting involved.

Applications Are Made Through Organizations

Unlike some international programs, individuals cannot directly apply for Erasmus+ funding on their own. Applications must be submitted by organizations, such as youth associations, NGOs, educational institutions, or training centers. In some cases, informal groups of young people can also apply on behalf of participants, depending on the type of activity.

These applications are submitted to the National Agency responsible for Erasmus+ in the applicant’s country. The organization manages the project, handles the funding request, and coordinates participant involvement.

Accessing Erasmus+ Activities

Participation in Erasmus+ activities usually happens through one of two main pathways:

1. Erasmus AccreditationOrganizations that frequently run mobility or youth projects can obtain Erasmus accreditation. This status allows them to receive funding more easily and organize activities such as exchanges, training, or educational mobility on a regular basis.

2. Standard Erasmus+ ProjectsOrganizations without accreditation can still participate by applying for standard projects. These projects typically focus on specific types of activities, including:

  • Youth Exchanges – Short-term international meetings where young people from different countries come together to learn, collaborate, and exchange ideas.

  • Vocational Mobility – Opportunities for students or trainees in vocational education to gain professional experience abroad.

  • Youth Participation Activities – Projects that encourage young people to engage in democratic life and decision-making processes.

  • DiscoverEU – A travel initiative that allows young people to explore Europe while learning about its cultures and societies.

How Young People Can Get Involved

If you are a young person interested in joining Erasmus+ activities, the most practical step is to connect with local organizations that run Erasmus+ projects. Many youth organizations regularly organize exchanges, training courses, and participation activities funded by the program.

You can usually find open opportunities through:

  • Local youth organizations or NGOs

  • Universities or vocational training institutions

  • National Erasmus+ Agency announcements

  • Youth project platforms and community networks

By joining one of these initiatives, participants can gain international experience, intercultural skills, and informal learning opportunities while connecting with peers from across Europe.
